A rare piece of British printmaking history. This bold vintage abstract screen print is by Kip Gresham, a celebrated master printmaker from Cambridge, England.
Gresham founded the Print Workshop in 1975 and later the Chilford Hall Press (1982) with partner Sam Alper. His distinguished career includes directing Curwen Chilford Prints (1989-94), Gresham Studios(1994-2001), and establishing the Print Studio in Cambridge in 2002. During his life he has produced over 2,500 editions and unique prints, collaborating with giants of British art, including Elizabeth Frink, John Hoyland, Alan Davie, Terry Frost and Eduardo Paolozzi.
This stunning abstract screen print shows Gresham's creative expertise. The image feels almost humourous with juxtaposing imagery of a head, cigarette and lungs; the head is looking towards the cigarette stub with the words miracle filter over layered. It feels sarcastic because of the bold use of colour and active layered images which subvert the subject. Technically brilliant, printed on a fine creamy paper.
