Product Details

An original watercolour by E Thornton Crawford. Dated to approximately 1830.

Edmund Thornton Crawford (1806-1885) was a Scottish landscape and marine painter celebrated for his pivotal role in 19th-century Scottish art. Born in Cowden, near Dalkeith, he initially trained as a house-painter before studying at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh. He is best known for his robust coastal scenes, heavily influenced by the Dutch Old Masters he studied during several visits to Holland. His reputation was cemented in 1848 with the painting "Eyemouth Harbour," leading to his election as a full Academician of the Royal Scottish Academy. His style is characterized by vigorous handling, good colour, and a broad atmospheric approach that bridges the gap between earlier Romantic traditions and later realism. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Scotland (including "Coast Scene, North Berwick") and numerous UK public collections.

A beautifully, sensitive watercolour painting framed in a classic gold plaster and wood frame. The painting depicts a working women dressed in heavy layers and carrying a large basket. Perhaps she is going to the market or selling her wares? Her clothes are of bold colours, with a yellow blouse, charcoal skirt and vibrant red cape. The colours and the weight of the fabric makes her look strong in her daily tasks.
