A stunning original mid century screen print by Michael Peel (British, 1940-2017)
Michael Peel was a British printmaker and photographer. One of a generation of artists who saw art as mechanism for social change, to reveal hidden iniquities of contemporary society. Works were influenced by the idealism of post-WWII period, the hedonism of 1960s and the hardened realities of political and social upheavals in Britain of 1970s-90s. Michael taught alongside his practice, redefining the role of printmaking in high art.
The artwork is titled 'slab' and depicts a series of geometric shapes filled with the most beautiful red - pink - blue saturated gradient. This piece comes from a very small limited edition of 10. The screen printed technique creates a stunning sharp image which is endlessly satisfying and ensures that the colours stay as true and vibrant as the day it was printed. I love the contrast between the saturated perfect colour and the aging creamy coloured paper. Signed, named and numbered in heavy pencil to the lower edge.
